Real Estate Photography Class with Spencer

August 14, 2026 in Photography, Real Estate

I had the privilege to teach a one-on-one photography class with Spencer this week. It was a pleasure to work with him due to his creative and open spirit. Most of the class was hands-on. Spencer had already been trained in photography prior to coming here, and had a grasp of the image, so he wanted to really home in on some of the camera concepts as well as further explore the language of composition.

On the second day of the course, we had our first field excursion exploring the concepts of Exposure (Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO), Focal Length and Depth of Field, and visited the downtown library, which in my opinion is an architectural marvel, which provides many photo opportunities, whether you’re shooting the interior spaces, or capturing the view of Austin from the top balcony, or finding interesting people to capture.

On the third day, Spencer and I were joined by my Real Estate Broker friend Douglas Goff, who also wanted to learn more about the camera. We all grabbed our cameras and explored the language of visual composition walking the busy streets of downtown Austin, looking and finding more photo opportunities. Their assignments were to incorporate three compositional expressions like Frame within Frame, Leading Line, Rule of Thirds. We captured a few good shots…

And finally on the fourth and final day, with the kind help from one of my real estate friends, we shot two beautiful staged properties in Austin. Spencer got to witness and experience the ins and outs of Real Estate Photography, from setting up the camera, choosing angles, understanding color temperature, and editing.
